I have new love in my life. She allows me to express myself in ways I never thought I could. Capturing unforgettable moments with her takes my breath away. Thing is, my wife knows all about her.

I have new love in my life. She allows me to express myself in ways I never thought I could. Capturing unforgettable moments with her takes my breath away. Thing is, my wife knows all about her.

I can hear it now, “How could he?” and “How dare he?” Now before you come barging down my door with the Cheaters TV crew, hear me out. You’ve got the wrong picture. In fact, you may know who she is. Her name is Canon. I’ve fallen in love with photography. It’s been going on now for a little under a year and a half. And it’s a love affair that I’m willing to scream from the rooftops for.

A friend of mine let me take a shot with his “fancy schmancy” camera two summers ago. I was so afraid of dropping the camera that my hands would not stop shaking. Somehow I still found the confidence to press the shutter button. I looked at the photo I just made on the digital screen of the camera and it was…blurry. I didn’t care. For some reason when I heard that first “click” after pressing the button – I was hooked.

I’m pretty much self taught (“self taught” doesn’t mean “I’m great” – it just means I couldn’t afford to pay for expensive photography classes, books, etc.) However, I am truly grateful for all the lessons and words of wisdom that my fellow “photography geeks” (self-proclaimed) have given me.

Nowadays I have a camera of my own and I can’t stop making it blink. You see, I have learned from some of the more affordable books that I read, that photography is all about perspective. While there are some common rules and courtesies that most photographers follow when making and taking their photographs – the “art” of photography lies completely in the mind’s eye of each individual photographer.

I was on a photo walk the other day. My fellow “photo geeks” and I decided on Tarpon Springs, FL as our canvas. Prior to arriving there, I knew little to none about the history of the city. Did the city’s name say it all? I heard of the sponge docks, but what exactly are sponge docks? I had heard of how the Greek culture was infused into the city and its cuisine. Other than those things, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

As we pulled into the heart of this town’s main street, Dodecanese Blvd., I couldn’t help but feel like I was in another state. It just didn’t seem like the Florida I was used to. The architecture, the restaurant names, the entire atmosphere. On both sides of the street stood individual men and women with their sun-kissed skin waving red flags directing you to park in their lot, “Park here! Two Dollar Parking! Park Here!” Little did we know that the two dollars bought us a space and a bunch of constant offers to purchase a boat ride or other scenic tour. American capitalism at its finest. As a business owner, I appreciated and respected that.

We respectfully dodged the offers and made our way to an authentic Greek restaurant to have lunch. They say that you can tell a truly authentic restaurant based on the make up of its patrons. We walked into this restaurant, heard the chatter of the customers already dining there, noticed it wasn’t English but in Greek. We were definitely at the right place. Lunch was incredible. Fresh Greek style caviar and octopus as an appetizer, eggplant stuffed with ground beef and cheese as my entree along with a side of the best lemon infused potatoes.

After lunch we made our way down Dodecanese Blvd. to start shooting (taking pictures). My attention was caught by the sound of music, music played with strings, it was harp music. I turned around and saw a lady plucking each string, fingers worn and feet locked in sandals delicately pressing down on the harp pedals. Her hair disheveled by the brisk wind and her eyes were closed. I didn’t know the name of the song she was playing but I knew the melody. As I hummed the same notes in unison with her playing I made my way over to her. She was parked in an opportune location right against the curb of the dock which aided as a perfect seat for her to play her harp. I pulled a couple of dollar bills out of my wallet and placed them in her makeshift bucket of “TiPs.” I asked her if it was okay if I could snap a couple of photos of her and her harp. She opened her eyes and said, “Sure. Thank you for the tip and thank you for asking…before taking pictures that is. Sometimes people try to take my picture from afar and they don’t think I notice them. So thanks again for the tip and thanks again for asking.” I replied with a respectful, “Thank YOU.”

Her name was Meta. She told me about her love for music and how she once traveled the world with a renowned orchestra. Nowadays it’s just her and her harp – that she maneuvers on her own from site to site with her makeshift dolly. She told me about her kids and that one of her daughters had a passion for photography as well. I asked her if I could take the pictures as she played her harp. She replied with a quiet smile of affirmation and said, “Go right ahead, I don’t know when they’ll ask me to leave.” It was right at that moment that I realized first hand the power of photography. That each photo that anybody takes has a story behind it. A story that belongs only to the people in front of and behind the lens. It’s funny how a five minute conversation leaves you with something that will last forever.

I’ve taken thousands of pictures since I started learning about photography less than two years ago. I’ve got thousands of stories to share. Looking at we’ve done with SoReal Unlimited – with our cards, t-shirts and overall core values of our company – I think I might just add photography to our product line. I’m a sucker for anything that strengthens the bonds of life and love. Photography… I’m glad I met you. My people will be calling your people. Real soon.

Over the phone, over a cup of coffee, emails, handwritten letters or even in sprit – think about the last conversation you had with your mom. What did you talk about? Was the conversation simple? Was it profound? Every mom knows something that we don’t. SRU Presents… 10am With Mom.

In the last year I’ve found myself clicking on the call “Mom” button on my iPhone almost every day. I would try to reach her in the morning sometime between 8am and 9am. Every time I called she would say, “Let me call you back, I’m on the phone with your sister.” Call it sibling rivalry but I wondered if there would ever be a day when she would say, “Hi! Hold on, let me tell your sister that I’ll call her back.” It never happened. I figured it was because my sister had been calling her every morning for that past five years at that same time and that my mom was always so excited to hear about the latest and greatest with her grandchildren.

It was only a matter of time before I realized that maybe I should call her at a different time. First of all, I would spare myself from hearing the “Let me call you back.” line and secondly I could potentially start my own scheduled daily call with Mom.

For the past year I have had my 10am with Mom. Around the ten o’clock hour every morning I have been able to call and hear her say, “Hello, how are you? Let’s talk.” To this day it is music to my ears. I’m not exactly sure why I was so intent on setting up a daily call with her. Maybe I’m just at a point in my life where her motherly advice is needed on a day to day basis. Over the next few posts I will share some of the infinite wisdom that she and all moms maintain. Sometimes it’s not about what they have to tell you. Sometimes it’s about them listening and lending you their ear. Mom, this is for you. Thank you for being such a positive radiance in my life.

- M

10am with Mom 09.21.09
“Hold the mayo… please.”

Mom mentioned that she was going to make herself a sandwich for lunch and that’s when I asked her the same question I always ask her, “Are you going to put mayo on that sandwich?” Mom hates it when I ask her that question. For some reason my conversation with Mom today was about the school lunches that she used to make for me when I was in grade school.

I was one of those kids that brought my lunch to school almost every day. I guess that is why to this day I’m so infatuated with cafeteria food – hospitals, schools you name it. I never had a chance to get sick of it I guess. So when I ask Mom about whether or not she is going to put mayo on her sandwich I can see her rolling her eyes and firing back at me, “Why? What do you care?” Sounds kind of brutal doesn’t it? In actuality Mom knows she’s the reason why I can’t stand mayo. She used to cake it all over my bologna sandwiches. 10 parts mayo, 1 part bologna. Mom’s reasoning for it all is that she was trying to “fatten” me up. Plus, times were tough growing up and bringing lunch to school was more economical. Some say that you won’t know if you like the taste of something unless you try it. I tried mayo… I tried too much of it I guess.

Looking back on it all I think I know why I always ask Mom if she is going to put mayo on her sandwich. It’s not because I want to constantly remind her of how she was the cause of something that I can’t stand the sight or smell of. It’s because thinking of the days when I had to bring lunch to school (as I admired the warmth of cafeteria food and the beauty and wonder of my rich friends’ “Scooby Doo” style sandwiches) really reminds me of my childhood and where I came from. While I may not have one jar or packet of mayonnaise anywhere near me or my fridge these days – it is a huge reminder of the humble path I traveled growing up. Mom and Dad worked hard to put food on our table. We didn’t always get what we wanted but we always had each other. We always had our family. Thank you Mom for making me not like mayonnaise so much. THANK YOU.

10am with Mom sometime ago.
“Listen with your heart and soul… not your mouth, not even your ears.”

When Mom first said this to me I had to take a step back to process it mentally. We were arguing at the time. Arguments are few and far between with us. But on this day neither of us were willing to give in. Without going into detail and now looking back on the situation I believe she had a great point to make. In the heat of an argument, each person is so set on their own beliefs and opinions that they aren’t really listening to the other side of things.

When Mom said, “Listen with your heart and soul… not your mouth, not even your ears.” I believe she wanted me to hear her side of things by opening my heart and soul to hers. Sometimes our words do not give our feelings justice, sometimes they are an injustice to what we really mean. Our ears can hear words but it is our heart and soul that processes them. When our thoughts are driven by our mouths without being filtered by our heart and soul, our most honest intentions are lost in translation.

I hear you now Mom.

2009 brings bigger and brighter things to SoReal Unlimited! We have assembled a team of SRU Interns that are all going to shine this coming semester. Many of you have asked about what the SRU Internship is all about. We actually like to think of it as a two sided coin – an internship on one side and a “mentorship” on the other. Take a peek into the experiences of one of SRU’s own Andrew Aguirre…

“Mike opened up an opportunity for us. He gave us the opportunity to use our shadowed talents and hobbies to help build a company and have the company help build us in return. SRU gives each of us a chance to dive into our own creative thoughts and ideas and apply them to something that will actually make an impact.

This internship brought out the writer, the photographer, the designer, and the creator in all of us. SRU gave us the opportunity to see what a little creativity and art can accomplish, and let us learn some good values that are usually masked by business mindsets.

To us, the things we do for SoReal Unlimited were just things we did on the side, or something we did without thought. But now Mike gave us a chance to shed some light on our artistic abilities- bringing something surreal into something so real.”

As many of you know, SRU is a proud partner of the SHO Foundation. Please see the press release below regarding a Spring fundraiser sponsored by the SHO Foundation. For more information please visit the SHO Foundation’s website.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 17, 2009

SHO Foundation Presents “Art SHO” 2009

Winter Park, Fla.—“Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders. Some of them just do not know
it yet. The SHO Foundation was created to make a positive difference in the lives of children
through sponsored fine arts programs. We want to remind them that their dreams can be a
reality.”

That stands as the mission statement for the SHO (Simply Helping Others) Foundation, a newly
formed non-profit organization based in Winter Park, FL. The organization’s founders and
newly formed Board of Directors have joined forces to shed a more positive light on the lives of
middle school aged children whose creative environments and skill sets, regardless of today’s
economy, have remained non existent and untapped.

“We want to show kids that the creative arts is a form of inspiration, it is a way for them to let
loose of their imaginations and just be who they want to be without anything holding them
back,” says Rainer Flor the SHO Foundation’s President and Founder.
On Friday, April 10, 2009 the SHO Foundation will be holding its first “Art SHO”, a
fundraising event that will be held at Brook Pifer’s Rockstar Studios inside The Lofts of
Winter Park (520 North Orlando Ave, Penthouse #1) from 7PM – 11PM. The event will
highlight several local artists and musicians who have partnered with the SHO Foundation to
celebrate the evening.

Exhibiting artists include Nicky Botelho and her one-of-a-kind paintings
(www.myspace.com/poeticreageshoesbynicky). Also in attendance will be Tammy Krivanek
with her fine art photography (www.anordinarygirl.com), Melissa Smith who captures images of
bike riders and bike culture (www.shortformelissa.com) and Mel Taylor with mixed media
artwork (www.myspace.com/meltaylor).

As a special feature, musician and SHO Foundation board member Ron Irizarry will be
debuting a music video screening of his song Henry Poole is Here (www.ronmusic.com). As
well, all in admittance will participate in a Paint-by-Numbers interactive artwork workshop.
This event is open to the public and there is $5 cover wherein all proceeds will go to the SHO
Foundation. This event will be catered by The Black Bean Deli.

For more information please visit www.shofoundation.org or email info@shofoundation.org.
